About the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine offers comprehensive general pediatric care to children from birth through adolescence at  North Carolina Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Comprised of 23 pediatricians, one nurse practitioner, and a PhD specialist in health behavior and injury prevention, our division is active in patient care, teaching, advocacy, and research. We are responsible for the medical care of children in the newborn nursery, the inpatient hospital setting, the outpatient clinic (including well child care) and the pediatric emergency department. We also staff the child abuse call system through the Beacon program. The Division is linked to the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center through three faculty. The Division is also linked with the Child Medical Evaluation Program, a statewide program for diagnosing child abuse.

The pediatric clinic provides full primary care services, but also has a specific constipation clinic and a nutritional disorder clinic (which focuses on children with obesity and failure to thrive). Behavior specialists and an adolescent specialist see patients in our clinic as well. We have also recently introduced a referral diagnostic clinic for complex patients without clear subspecialty problems.

Inpatient Care

Our faculty members attend in two week rotations. Our call schedule ensures the presence of a divisional faculty member in-house every day and every evening. In 2003, our division took care of 900 children (about 30% of all hospitalized children at UNC).

Our Division's medical staff provides comprehensive hospital care to children of all ages admitted to the NC Children's Hospital. Often the physician your child saw in one of our clinics will also care for your child when hospitalized. But if not, we recognize that communication between the in-house staff and the clinics is important during the hospital stay and after, to assure the continuity of care your child needs. We also realize a hospital can be a scary place for children. That's why the staff and planners for the new NC Children's Hospital have gone to such lengths to make the experience as pleasant as possible for young ones and their families.

Newborn Nursery

The Division provides care for infants who are born at North Carolina Women's Hospital, which adjoins N.C. Children's Hospital.  In 2003, our Division took care of over 1800 newborns at UNC.  We also teach medical students and residents with a defined curriculum.

Outpatient Care (Continuity Clinic)

UNC offers comprehensive primary care to children at clinics located in the North Carolina Children's Hospital. Our Division sees about 40% of all pediatric outpatients at UNC.

This is a  resident-driven clinic with faculty supervision providing well child and acute care. Child development specialists join the team for well child visits of children less than 2 years of age.  In the last year, 9800 visits took place in this clinic.  Our adolescent specialist has clinic every week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
