GET TO KNOW YOUR FELLOW RESIDENTS!
This week’s resident in the spotlight is from the second largest city in Michigan and the first city in the United States to add fluoride to its drinking water back in 1945 – Grand Rapids. (That must account for his bright smile.) He was born into a family of seven children where he learned to do his part and communicate effectively. This resident started working early in life at the age of 13 and has held jobs at a feed mill, at a manufacturing factory and as a corn detasseler. He attended Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan where he obtained his degree in biology and health sciences before matriculating to the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. While completing his undergraduate degree and two years into medical school he worked as a nursing assistant in the Orthopaedic/Trauma Unit. While a medical student he also completed research looking at the complication and failure rates of open reduction and internal fixation for the treatment of forearm fractures. He and his wife, Mirenda, have three children – Gavin, Zoe and Cash. When not watching the Lion King or Thomas the Train for the 200th time, he enjoys running (after his children), music and reading. Always understated and unassuming except for maybe the “faux-hawk,” this week’s resident is PAUL VANSWEDEN!
