In 2006, The Teaching Center began a one week elective for those upper-level residents wanting to improve their teaching. The weekly schedule will include an opportunity for the resident to lead 3 teaching sessions, and to evaluate many other teaching activities, such as morning reports, noon conferences, preclinic talks, and inpatient rounds. A member of the Teaching Center will accompany the resident so that the resident and he can compare evaluations, teaching strategies used, and thoughts about how the teaching experience might have been improved.
The rationale for offering this elective to residents is that, because of time constraints, residents will be unable to take advantage of the course "Becoming an Effective Medical Educator." Our faculty feels that learning how to teach should be an integral part of resident education; this elective should help residents recognize the steps needed to become a better teacher.
