Assessing Learners

Skillfully assessing learners presents a number of challenges for the medical educator including the need to assess medical learners’ achievement of competency in 6 different areas: medical knowledge, patient care, communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, and professionalism. Because of these challenges, and the need for assessment tools to be valid, reliable and feasible, a number of different tools must be used to accurately assess each learner:

  • Direct observation of the learner
  • Written testing (such as multiple choice questions)
  • Oral Examination
  • Chart Review
  • Procedure logs, Case logs, Portfolio development
