Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD - Program Director
Dr. Kenya McNeal-Trice received a BS in Biology from Spelman College before entering medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She completed pediatric residency training at the University of North Carolina and then was a Pediatric Chief Resident at WakeMed Hospital, one of UNC's affiliated training sites. She remained on faculty at WakeMed until 2007 when she returned to the UNC School of Medicine to assume a leadership role in medical student education as a member of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. In 2010, she became the Director of Medical Student Education in Pediatrics. As a student educator, Dr. McNeal-Trice was an innovator, creating the nationally recognized and award winning Transition to Pediatrics Internship course; an outstanding teacher, receiving the The Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award in the Clinical Sciences from the UNC SOM Class of 2013; and a tremendous student advocate, serving as an advisor in the Larry Keith Advisory Colleges and as a mentor in the UNC Carolina Covenant Program. She was recently named as a Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund Distinguished Teaching Professor for her demonstrated excellence and leadership in medical education, as well as, innovative teaching techniques. Her clinical work focuses on pediatric hospital medicine and child maltreatment.

Dr. McNeal-Trice was named Pediatric Residency Program Director in December 2013. We are thrilled with the educational expertise, enthusiasm, and creativity that she brings to our residency program.

Wesley Burks, MD - Chair, Department of Pediatrics
In addition to Department Chair, Dr. Burks is a member of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at UNC.  He attended medical school at the University of Arkansas and completed residency training at the Arkansas Children's Hospital.  Prior to coming to UNC, he was a member of the Duke University faculty.

Julie S. Byerley, MD, MPH - Vice Chair of Education, Department of Pediatrics
Dr. Byerley, a general pediatrician, received her MD from Duke University School of Medicine.  She completed residency training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also served as a Chief Resident.  From 2002-2010, Dr. Byerley was the Director of Medical Student Education for Pediatrics and served as Program Director from 2010-2013.

Kaye Gable, MD - Associate Program Director
Dr. Gable is a general pediatrician and the Program Director for the Pediatric Teaching Program of the Moses Cone Health System. She received her MD degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed residency training at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.  Dr. Gable served as Medical Director of the newborn nursery until 2009 when she became Program Director at MCHS.

Harvey J. Hamrick, MD - Associate Program Director
Dr. Hamrick is a general pediatrician at UNC.  He received his MD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also completed residency training and served as a Chief Resident.  Dr. Hamrick served as Program Director of the Residency Program from 1987-2010.

Diane Howell, MD - Associate Program Director
Dr. Howell is a member of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at UNC and she also serves as Director of the Resident Continuity Clinic.  She is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed residency training at UNC.  She also served as a UNC Pediatric Chief Resident.

Stephen Leinenweber, MD - Associate Program Director
Dr. Leinenweber is pediatric critical care specialist and Associate Director of Pediatrics at WakeMed. He completed his medical school and pediatric residency in Chicago at Rush University and Cook County Hospital, respectively. After residency, he completed his fellowship training in critical care medicine at Duke University. In 2003, he joined the UNC faculty.

Michael Steiner, MD - Associate Program Director
Dr. Steiner is Chief of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  After graduating from Temple University School of Medicine, he joined the UNC Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Training Program.  Dr. Steiner served as a UNC Pediatric Chief Resident.

Dr. Connelly graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine; Dr. Herndon from the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine; and from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, Dr. Permar.

Kelly Lear and Denita Moore - Coordinators
Kelly is a very proud native North Carolinian, hailing from the coastal town of Jacksonville.  She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in Psychology and minor in Music Performance.  During her time as an undergraduate, she was a member of the trumpet section for the Marching Tar Heels.  Kelly joined the Pediatric Education Office staff in 2001 as the student coordinator and began focusing on the residency in 2006.  She is mom to Ruffin, her beloved Chihuahua and doting aunt to her nephew, Atticus McRadicus.  Kelly thinks Bon Jovi is the best band ever, dreams of one day owning a pet flamingo, enjoys visiting the beautiful beaches of Onslow County, and bleeds Carolina Blue - Go Heels! 

Denita is originally from Charlotte, NC but now calls rural Chatham County home. She graduated from North Carolina Central University with a BA in History Education. While at NCCU, Denita was a member of History Club, Phi Alpha Theta, Pi Gamma Mu, and the Golden Key Honor Society. She joined the Pediatric Education Office staff in 2013 and her work primarily focuses on the residency with a little fellowship support sprinkled in for fun. Denita married her high school sweetheart (awww), and together, they are the proud parents to two dashingly handsome boys, Elijah and Ethan. Denita believes no day is complete without a cup of coffee, enjoys curling up with a good romance novel, and loves spending time with friends and family, especially her two boys!
