 Overview
2002 marked the 50th
anniversary for the Department of Pediatrics at the
University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine
at Chapel Hill. Our dedicated medical experts
provide clinical care for children from infancy to
maturity who come to UNC Hospitals and clinics, and we
serve as faculty for educating future pediatric
physicians and other pediatric health care
professionals.
Pediatric Faculty
We can provide outstanding care to patients because we
have excellent clinicians in all pediatric and
pediatric surgical subspecialties. This allows
us to have skilled multi-disciplinary teams that work
well together to deal with almost any disease or
disorder a child may have. The Department has a
faculty of over 150 professionals involved in
teaching, research and patient care.
Services
Our range of services includes treating premature
infants (sometimes as small as a pound), full-term
newborns, toddlers, youth, adolescents, and all ages
and life stages in between. We treat complex
medical problems and provide general pediatric care.
Our staff cares for patients in the hospital and by
appointment in clinics. We also offer emergency
and acute care service in a pediatric section of the
ER (located in the lower level of the UNC
Neurosciences Hospital).
The Department of Pediatrics
provides specialized care in various clinics in the
following subspecialties: allergy, cardiology,
endocrinology, gastroenterology, general and primary
care, genetics and metabolism, hematology, immunology,
infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, oncology,
pulmonology, rehabilitation, rheumatology, child
psychiatry, sports medicine, adolescent medicine, and
dermatology. We also provide special follow up
of high-risk premature infants and offer special
clinics for the evaluation of children with
developmental and behavioral problems, obesity, and
suspected abuse and neglect.
Most of our clinics meet in the
pediatric ambulatory clinic spaces of the N.C.
Children's Hospital.

divisions that provide care in these clinics.
Academic Center of Excellence
Our triple mission of providing clinical care to
patients while serving as a learning institution and a
center for pediatric medical research helps
distinguish UNC. Not only is our faculty
assuring the next generation of physicians is fully
prepared, but we also have earned a reputation as
leaders in medical research. This means we are
often at the forefront of providing state-of-the-art
methods for treating the many routine and complex
problems we see. And this translates into new
and better ways to care for our patients.
Because the Department of
Pediatrics medical staff also serves as faculty for
the UNC School of Medicine, our titles reflect both
clinical and academic roles. We know titles can
be confusing so we've added a
Glossary of Pediatric
Clinicians that we hope will help explain the
various functions of the UNC pediatric health care
team.
Child-Centered, Family
Focused
Every member of our staff is dedicated to the care of
children, from the tiniest premature infant to the
critically injured adolescent. We know that
treating a sick child is more than doing tests, giving
medicine or performing surgery. We recognize
that we are caring for a child, not just treating a
disease.
For more than half a century, our
Department has offered excellent, cutting edge care in
our children's units at UNC Hospitals. 2002
marked the beginning of a new era – all
pediatric services are now provided in our new
state-of-the-art facility, the
North Carolina Children's Hospital. Located
on the UNC medical campus in Chapel Hill, NC, this
building allows us to provide something North Carolina
has not had before -- complete inpatient
and outpatient care for children in one
location, a true children's hospital.
We thank you for giving us the
opportunity to provide care for the families of North
Carolina and beyond.
