Recognized Leadership

The UNC Department of Pediatrics is recognized nationally as a leader in treating children with cystic fibrosis and other respiratory disorders, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, cancer, and heart disease.  UNC doctors also specialize in treating children with gastrointestinal disorders, infectious diseases, birth defects, and problems of growth and development.  Only one other hospital in the country does more bronchoscopy, a diagnostic procedure where the airway can be visualized through a small scope that can be passed through the patient's nose.  Our cardiologists are also correcting heart defects of certain types in children without surgery.  These procedures are available at very few other hospitals in the world.
