Mission and Vision

Mission

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is dedicated to being a diverse, welcoming academic community focused on improving the health and well-being of children, adolescents and emerging adults in North Carolina and beyond.  Our exceptional clinical care, novel research and education of child health providers means no child need leave North Carolina for medical care for complex or chronic illness.

We strive to:

  • Deliver cutting–edge tertiary care, critical care, primary and preventative services to our patients, providing equitable care to all our patients, respecting the diversity of their backgrounds and valuing the concept of the medical home.
  • Engage in innovative basic science, translational, clinical, epidemiologic, health disparities, quality improvement and community-based participatory research.
  • Educate students, physicians and other health-care providers in pediatric medicine.
  • Empower our patients in developing successful chronic disease self-management as they transition from child to adult-focused medical providers.
  • Advocate for all children to reach their full potential by influencing public policy and legislation that promotes children’s health.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration for research, health services and child advocacy locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Increase the diversity of our leadership, faculty, staff and trainees.
  • Create an environment where all members of the faculty, staff, and learners are respected and valued.

Vision

We will be a model academic department, viewed as a center of excellence by families, health care providers, academic centers and industry. We will be integrated into both the community and the University of North Carolina, assisting health care providers, and being recognized for our expertise in understanding, preventing and treating childhood illness and disease.
